A general magnetic material is defined by the relative susceptibility tensor, χm, according to

where R is the rotation matrix to bring the susceptibility into the lab frame and I is the identity matrix. Negative χm indicates a diamagnetic material like silver or lead, and positive χm indicates a ferromagnetic material like iron or nickel.
